My name is Yahaira and I am a senior at Foothill Technology High School. I’m 18 years old and even though im a few years older than you I think I could of made a better decision than you when I was 16 if I were to get pregnant. I understand that you were put in a difficult situation at such a young age but there were so many things that you could have done to prevent it. For one you could have been taking birth control and taken precaution from the beginning or you could have used a condom. Being in “the mood” and bored is not an excuse for having unprotected sex. By the age of 16 you should have already been educated on what happens when you have sex.
I could not imagine being in your position. Since my parents are not as understanding as yours I would have chosen a different route. If I were to be in your situation I would have kept it a secret from my parents and gotten an abortion. I know many people would judge my decision but because my parents are so strict and have always wanted big things for me in the future I would not be able to look them in the eyes and tell them I am pregnant. I would simply not be ready to bring a child into this world because I am not in a stable position for it. My older sister got pregnant at the age of 18 and my parents were furious. She is now 21 and has a two-year-old toddler and a new born, both being raised by a single parent because their father is in prison and is not getting out any time soon. I see how she struggles and I would not be able to do what she does.
I am in no place to judge you on your decision and all I can do is simply state my opinion. I know that at the time of your pregnancy you thought that adoption was the best decision but I personally believe that you should of gotten the abortion. You did an amazing thing by carrying the baby to term and giving it to Vanessa since she could not have a baby herself but I think the abortion would have been the better option. If you would of gotten the abortion you could of kept going to school and not have to worry about a pregnancy. You wouldn’t have to go through the morning sickness or have to have everyone stare at you in the halfway for being the center of attention with your pregnant stomach. You could of gotten the abortion and gone on to live your life knowing that someone else is taking care of your baby because you could not do it yourself. Having a baby is supposed to be a beautiful thing for people who are mature and ready to take on the responsibility, not for young girls that THINK they are ready to have sex and end up pregnant. If you would of gotten it you could of just moved on with your life and had a baby later in the future.
I personally am not a big fan of teen pregnancy. I personally know about 6 or 7 teenage girls that are not even 17 yet and already have a baby. I also know another 3 or 4 that are currently expecting one. I think it is freaking ridiculous for girls in my generation to think it is okay to have sex and get pregnant. It is simply a trend that every girl wants to be a part of. I can’t go on social media anymore without seeing another pregnant girl every other week. I just dont think is right and I think girls need to smarter.
I am not here to judge you Juno and I think what you did took a lot of courage but I would have done things very different than you. I know you can not go back in time and change your decision but I do think it would of made your life a lot easier.
